The Fortis compound was an old hunting lodge high up in the mountains. The moon was high in the sky casting a glow on the tops of the trees, with shadows of branches littering the ground. At the top of the mountain, inside the lodge, there was a party going on. The music echoed through the forest-covered mountain top, the sound of the bass thump-thumping against the surrounding tree trunks.

Damian, their tribe leader, sat sideways in a reclining armchair, his feet dangling over the armrest. Even though the snow had long since melted in the Southern California sun, he wore his snow boots with jeans. His red and black flannel shirt was unbuttoned, revealing his muscular chest. He winked at Ignacio, who was playing DJ. Notch, as they all called him, was good with music—always had been.

Dahlia danced in a skimpy dress in front of Damian, no doubt trying to get his attention. She had no sense of rhythm. Whatever song was playing in her head, it wasn’t the one Notch was spinning. Her hips swayed slowly as the beat pounded quickly. Damian just shook his head at how ridiculous she looked. Two Fortis women were dancing seductively in the corner where they’d found a tiny pocket of shadow. Almost every surface had someone dancing on it—counters, tables, chairs, the floor. Humans lay scattered about the main room of the lodge, leftover feeders from earlier feasting, still dazed and drunk from their sacrifice to the Fortis tribe.

This is a good party, Damian thought to himself.

Damian leaned way back, his head resting on the arm of the chair, staring up at the high ceilings and exposed beams above him. He’d ripped the animal heads off the walls decades ago, but this place was still so rustic to him. One day he’d need to focus on interior decorating and make this place a little more modern.

“What are we doing about the Prophecy?” Isabelle asked, shouting over the sound of the music, her cold hard stare digging deep into Damian’s eyes. She sat on the hearth in front of a raging fire that twisted, turned and popped in the background.

Damian rolled his eyes at her. “You take things too seriously. Just enjoy yourself for once, Isabelle. This is a party.”

“And you don’t take things seriously enough, Damian,” Isabelle snapped. She was pretty, but tough. The first thing people noticed when they saw her was her stern expression. If she rode off on a motorcycle with a machine gun on her back, no one would think twice. But if they stared long enough, they might see smooth olive skin, long pretty brown hair, high cheek bones.

Damian was once very fond of Isabelle. She balanced him out, and there had been a time when he would seek her out for her advice. Now she was ruining his party with the giant stick up her ass and it was getting on his nerves. He was tiring of his Number Two, but he was well aware that many Fortis vampires would choose her over him.
